After not having the time or energy to work on this thing for the longest time, I finally got back at it. Today I did the model for the Gratha fighter, one of my favorite Kilrathi fighters of all time. Yesterday I completely redid the Dralthi model, so it looks WAY better than before:

Old model:

You'll see in the new shot it's much more smooth and accurate around the big semi-circle wings. Also you can see my wingman, flying a Hornet, attacking one of the Gratha.

(you'll notice I'm now running at 1024x768, thanks to some generous guy on ars (may have been zathras2) who donated his copy of the full version of FS2 with the high resolution additions... looks much better)

I've modelled most of the first mission, with four waypoints, an asteroid field, and the same enemies as in the first mission of Wing 1 (2 Dralthi, then 3 Salthi)

In total I've modelled the Salthi, Dralthi, Gratha, Hornet, and the Tiger's Claw itself.

YES I KNOW THE TEXTURES LOOK HORRIBLE. They are PLACEHOLDERS. I want to get the modelling all done before I start doing proper texturing.

For some reason, I'm having a total blast doing this. I've even created an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of my progress. I'm pretty pumped about it now!

BUMP...

Just got the first of the music in place!

There's the default music when you're cruising through space, the battle music, and the little victory sting... right now the victory sting only comes when you've defeated ALL the enemies, not each one, but I should be able to fix that.

It's AMAZING flying around shooting Dralthi and Salthi and hearing that music... makes the whole thing seem like a real project...

I'm having fun.

More screenies!

Here's a shot of a Krant with the Tiger's Claw in the background:

Here's my revised Salthi tailgating a Dralthi:

I just have to do the Jalthi and I'll have done all the Kilrathi fighters!

Come on, isn't anyone else excited??

Riso, you crack me up.

Anyway I'm still at it, going a mile a minute. Here's the feared Jalthi, with its six guns!

Bumpage. I've done the Rapier, Scimitar and Raptor, which means I've finished all the Confed and Kilrathi fighters.

Here's the Raptor:

Here's a Scimitar just about to crash into a Jalthi (collision detection does work!)

Now I'm going to make some of the larger cap ships, like the Drayman, and the Exeter, the Ralari and the Fralthi.

UPDATE:

I've done models for the Venture corvette, the Exeter destroyer and the Drayman class transports, thus completing ALL the Confed capital ships.

Here's a neat shot with a Venture, a Drayman and the Claw, with a Scimitar and a Dralthi duking it out in the background:

Here's a closeup of the Exeter. All the ships are modelled exactly as they appear in the Wing 1 manual (Claw Marks)... in other words, the Claw is exactly 700m long, the Exeter is 360m long, etc. Probably nobody will ever care about that except for me, but...

Thanks, man. Much appreciated.

This is very much a labor of love, a tribute to my favorite game of all time. It's tiring (and complicated) work sometimes, but I'm still having a blast doing it. I even posted to the Wing Commander CIC forums talking about it (after someone else posted about how cool it would be to remake WC1, I couldn't really resist)

Yes, very cool indeed. What people don't realize is that 3D modeling is a lot harder then it looks. I learnt 3D studio Max a long time ago and am even certified for it, not that it really matters anymore I guess. I know a few more 3D apps for both macs and PC's, but I eventually got tired of the arts, so kinda just walked away from it. I don't know what tools you're using Jeremy and how easy they are, but props anyway. 3D modeling takes time and patience, so this game is obviously a passion of yours.

Good stuff.

Thanks OW. I'm using 3D Studio Max to do the modelling as that's what I'm most comfortable with, then I save the files as .DXF (which is the only format I found that didn't introduce wacky conversion problems) and then import them into Truespace for re-sizing and texturing. Only Truespace files can be converted to Freespace2 .POF files using the freeware COB2FS2 converter. Truespace has an interface described by one tutorial author as being designed by "monkeys hopped up on space crack" and that isn't too far from the truth, but it's actually pretty good for texturing. It sucks ass for modelling though.

Making models for importing into games is trickier than just modelling for animation, because you have all sorts of limitations-- mostly poly limits, like the 850 triangle limit for ships (not including subsystems like turrets, etc) but also geometry limitations-- there can be no "holes" in the mesh and no non-flat surfaces. I kind of like working with limitations though... it reminds me of playing with Lego as a kid and working around the limits of that toy's geometry...

Hey Jeremy, looks like you got noticed by one of the WCSaga guys!

Hey gevatter Lars, since you work with the WCSaga crew, tell me, how are you implementing WC-style waypoints with the FS2 engine?

Well he got my attention ^__^

About waypoints...well we made the missions in the FS2 stile, cause is so much easier then editing the FS2sc.
What you could do is to set some waypoints in a mission, but you wouldn't have the "jump to Nav" thing. So you have to fly the entire way to the waypoint. That could be quite boring and also make some problems, when the mission is not skripted in the right way.
So if you make WC Missions in FS2 you have to find different ways do to that.
Possibilites->
1)
Set waypoints and fly there manual...means that you will have enough time to make a coffee or set them quite close together, but then you have to skript you missions quite good.

2)
Make every Waypoint a single mission which you connect with the "Red Alert" missionscript. Doing that you will get into the red alert mission screen, when making a jump. Possitiv is that you can tell some part of the story on the red alert menu, negativ is that the mission is alway interrupted.

3) Don't make Waypointmissions ^__^

Well the second solution is the best I think, but you can also mix 1+2.
WC like missionjumping is not possible at the moment.

So if there are some people with interesst in our project join us...the WC Saga whats you ^__^ well at least if you got anything that you can do...modeling, programming, texturing, voice acting, CGI, bluescreen acting & editing, etc

Beside that...could we get your Ranklogos for our site...we made some, but they are quite...well....not very good.
