What's on my Pentium PC?
Those Apple ads in the late 1980s and early 1990s were quite effective- they showed that a typical Macintosh had quite a bit more potential in terms of software than a typical PC. This was overwhelmingly true in the 80's; in the early 90's you could get Windows 3.1 equivalents for some of the Mac software (but they sucked), but in the late 1990's a powerful Pentium PC with lots of RAM and HD space and running Win98 or NT 4.0 is just as capable as a Mac of running cool software, and it multitasks better and crashes less (at least mine does, if your Pentium PC crashes all the time, sorry you got a crappy model, but mine hardly ever does!)
So here's a list of what's on my Pentium PC, right now:
- Cable modem networking software for ultra-fast internet access
- Microsoft Word 97
- My documents and short stories that will hopefully one day be bestsellers :)
- Microsoft Excel 97
- SPSS 7.0 statistical software
- Research data for diabetes day center questionnaire
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01
- My website (you're on it now!)
- Active Worlds 3-D virtual world browser
- Adobe Photoshop 5.0
- Paint Shop Pro 5.0 (only about ten times faster than Adobe)
- Bryce 3D virtual landscape generator
- 3D Studio Max 2.5
- Morph Studio SE
- Sound Forge 3.0
- Cakewalk MIDI sequencer 5.0
- Microsoft Visual Basic 4.0
- WinAmp music player
- CuteFTP internet file xfer program
- Netterm Telnet application
- Many, many cool games with 3DFX acceleration!
Well, that's about it. The 2D and 3D programs are because I am currently studying 2D and 3D computer animation, the music software because I like music (see my music page) and all the great Internet software because the Internet ROCKS!
